7 Mistakes Every Beginner Makes (and How to Fix Them)

July 15, 2025 · Coach Devon · 5 min read

1. Standing back after the return. New players return serve and stay at the baseline. Fix: return and move forward immediately — your default position is the kitchen line, not the baseline.

2. Trying to smash every dink. If it bounces low, it's a dink, not a smash. Fix: any ball below net height gets a controlled reset. Save the aggression for balls above the net.

3. Late paddle prep. Beginners swing after they see the ball, not before. Fix: paddle up and out in front the moment the opponent contacts the ball.

4. Overusing the wrist. Wrist flicks feel powerful but are wildly inconsistent. Fix: quiet wrist, use your shoulder and legs. Firm-but-loose grip (3–4 out of 10).

5. Watching where you hit instead of the ball. Head lift is why the ball goes into the net. Fix: eyes on the point of contact, keep your head down through the shot.

6. Not calling shots in doubles. Silence is chaos. Fix: talk on every ball — 'you,' 'me,' 'out,' 'bounce it.' Communication wins points that skill can't.

7. Serving too hard. First-serve percentage matters more than pace. Fix: hit an 80% serve you can land 90% of the time. You get zero points from double faults.

Every one of these is fixable in a single session with a real coach. If you've been playing 6+ months and still have any of these habits, book a lesson — it's the cheapest ROI in the sport.
