Kitchen Line Strategy: 7 Drills That Actually Work

At 4.0+, roughly 70% of points end at the kitchen line. If you want to break through a plateau, kitchen work is where the reps compound the fastest. Here are the seven drills I run at every camp.

1. Dinking crosscourt for 5 minutes without a miss. Sounds easy — try it. Reset the count on any pop-up above shoulder height. Builds pace control and forces you to use your legs, not your hands.

2. Dink-dink-speed-up. Partner feeds two dinks, you accelerate the third off the bounce. Focus on paddle face closing, not swing speed. This is the shot that wins 3.5 vs 4.0 matches.

3. Volley-to-volley hand battles from 7 feet. No dinks. Reset only with a controlled block. Trains soft hands under pressure — the single biggest gap between 4.0 and 4.5 players.

4. Third-shot drop into a live dink. Coach or partner sits at the kitchen and returns your drop. If the drop pops up, they crush it — a real consequence teaches touch faster than a cone drill.

5. Two-vs-one at the kitchen. Solo player on one side, two on the other, dinks only. Rotate every two minutes. Builds movement and shot selection under pressure.

6. Reset from mid-court. Partner drives at you from the baseline, you reset softly into the kitchen. This is the survival skill every intermediate player is missing.

7. Speed-up defense. Partner feeds a controlled speed-up at your chest; you block into the kitchen. Paddle up, elbow tucked, absorb, don't punch. Ten minutes a day for a month will change your game.
