Will Pickleball Be an Olympic Sport?

Short answer: not at LA 2028. Longer answer: 2032 in Brisbane is a real possibility, and 2036 is close to a lock.

The IOC process. For a sport to be added, its international federation must be recognized by the IOC, meet minimum global participation thresholds (typically 75+ countries across 4 continents for men, 40+ for women), demonstrate anti-doping compliance, and be formally proposed by the host city organizing committee at least seven years before the games.

Where pickleball stands. The International Federation of Pickleball claims 70+ member federations. Participation is deep in the U.S. and growing quickly in Canada, India, Spain, Vietnam, and Australia — but still shallow across most of Europe, Africa, and South America. That's the main obstacle.

LA 2028 is closed. Host-city additions were finalized in 2023 (breaking, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, and later baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash). Pickleball didn't make the cut, largely because IFP recognition and global depth weren't there in time.

Brisbane 2032 window. The host city can propose additional sports, and Australia's pickleball scene has grown fast. The most realistic scenario is pickleball as a demonstration sport in 2032, full medal sport in 2036.

What this means for players today: growth is going to keep accelerating regardless — pro tours, prize purses, and media rights deals are all up regardless of Olympic status. Camps and coaching infrastructure are expanding to meet that demand right now.
